| Groundbreaking Ceremony for Avery County Adoption and Humane Education Center-Shelter |
Date: 8/26 - 8/26
Time: 11 AM
Where: 279 New Vale Road behind Ingles grocery store in Newland
Local and seasonal residents are invited to join the festivities and meet County Commissioners, County Manager, Humane Society Board members, lots of "Friends," David Patrick Moses (local architectural firm that designed the building), and general contractor, David E. Looper & Company (which will construct the building).
Catherine Morton, Chair of the Avery Humane Society Board, enthusiastically announced that a $1 million matching gift has been made toward the construction of the new shelter by a local benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous.
"This can be a truly transformational gift for our Humane Society," said Morton, "but only if $1 million of matching funds can be raised. By starting construction, our Board is demonstrating faith in the people of our community and their willingness to reach into their pockets and come up with the funding we need to match this grant and see this shelter through to completion."
The Avery Friends of the Shelter was organized 3 years ago to raise funds for and awareness of the need for a new county animal shelter. Comprising over 200 local and seasonal residents, the "Friends" have held activities in all four corners of the county. This year, the major fund raising event is a 3-day golf tournament on September 11, 12 and 13, sponsored by the Elk River Country Club.
The "Paws & Claws" resale shop was opened June 2009 adjacent to the site of the new shelter to help bring in a steady revenue stream.

Banner Elk Paint Out Set for August 28
Linville, NC – When the Avery Arts Council and the Art Cellar Gallery co-hosted their Paint Out competition along the Banner Elk Greenway last year, they hoped it was the start of something great. Thirty five artists signed up to paint “en plein air,” and the crowd that gathered to view their day’s work confirmed it. The Banner Elk Paint Out had earned a place on the calendar.
This year the Banner Elk Paint Out is expanding to fill an entire weekend of art on August 27, 28, and 29. The Art Cellar Gallery returns as event sponsor and welcomes Fine Art Purveyors as co-sponsor, with proceeds benefitting the programs and services of the Avery Arts Council.
The program kicks off on Friday, Aug. 27, with a workshop taught by Scott Boyle from 9AM to 4PM. The workshop fee is $100 per person and advance registration is required. A reception for workshop attendees and the public starts at 4 and includes a “Quick Draw” activity to keep things lively. The folks at General Pencil, the oldest pencil company in the nation, have donated supplies for the Quick Draw as well as great stuff for the door prizes which will conclude the day’s festivities.
Saturday, August 28 is Paint-Out Day, when artists of all levels of experience set up along the Greenway and paint on site. Registration is $25 per person and takes place that morning from 8-10AM at the Art Cellar Gallery. Painting concludes at 3:00 PM and the day ends with a grand review of all submissions followed by a reception and the awarding of prizes. Sponsor Mike Hill of Fine Art Purveyors has put together some fabulous prizes from Graham: a set of art supplies in the artist’s choice of medium (value $500) for first place, a Graham floor easel (value $300) for second place, and a Museum Masters table easel (value $150) for third place. The Avery Coalition of Galleries is sponsoring a People’s Choice category with a $100 cash prize.
On Sunday, August 29 it’s back to the classroom for another workshop session, this time with Richard Oversmith. The class takes place from 9AM – 4PM, and advance registration is required. Fee is $100 per person.
