| Last of the Series of Summer Concerts in the Park with the Harris Brothers |
Date: 9/2 - 9/02
Banner Elk Chamber's Last Summer Concert in the Park, which will be held at the amphitheatre behind the Bank of America on Hwy 194 in Banner Elk. Concert starts at 6:30. Bring your chairs or blankets early, because a large crowd is expected. Food will be available for purchase.
The co-sponsors of this week's concert are Frank & Mary Watts, wonderful residents of Banner Elk and a benefactor of the Chamber.
About The Harris Brothers: The Harris Brothers are what you might call songsters. They draw from a vast repertoire of American traditional music—“Americana” is often used to describe their style, but the Harris Brothers just call it music. It is blues mixed up with traditional Appalachian music, jazz, country, bluegrass and rock n’ roll; it’s stripped down, intense and real. Grammy Award-winner David Holt says: “The Harris Brothers are one of my favorite groups. Great playing, singing and soul. It just doesn't get any better than this.”
Reggie and Ryan Harris were born into a musical family in Caldwell County in the foothills of western North Carolina and have been picking and singing since they were small children. They most often perform with just an acoustic guitar, a bass, a suitcase used as a kick drum, and their two voices (switching between lead and harmony vocals), but they have been known to throw in a fiddle, banjo or electric guitar now and again. Listeners often ask, “How can two people put off such a big sound?”
The Harris Brothers have been playing steady gigs for many years - from honkytonks to large venues like the Blue Ridge Music Center and festivals like MerleFest, Hickory Fest and the Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival. They have lent their talents to projects such as Vassar Clements’ Vassar’s Jazz (Winter Harvest) and Dead Grass (Cedar Glen), two Summervilla projects with Nashville bassist Ross Sermons, several Caldwell County Traditional Musicians Showcases, as well as albums of their own. The brothers have shared the stage with such accomplished musicians as Vassar Clements, Bobby Hicks, David Holt, Peter Rowan, David Grisman, and Laura Boosinger, to name just a few.
With their showmanship, diverse repertoire and ability to improvise, no two shows are ever the same. And, with their hearts truly in the music they are playing, the Harris Brothers are sure to captivate any audience.

| Mile High Race in the High Country-Bicycle Racing |
Date: 9/4 - 9/05
Returning to the NC High Country this weekend, will be professional bicycle racing.
Saturday will bring a Criterium race in the Village of Sugar Mountain at Tynecastle. The course is on a private road behind Mountain Community bank.
The course is a fun .6 mile long route, with 100 feet climbing per lap at 4,000 feet elevation. This makes it one of the highest elevated criteriums on the East Coast.
On Sunday, racing will begin in Banner Elk following the race route first established in past years with college races run by Lees-McRae College. The course is 10 miles long and follows Highway 194 to Pigeon Roost Road back to Horse Bottom Road to Dobbins Road. The route turns back to Banner Elk with a flat sprint finish to the Town Park. The afternoon races will follow the same route but will require the professionals to finish with a Beech Mountain Top Finish.
With the possibility of top pros like former LMC racer, Brent Bookwalters and former Tour De France winner, Cesar Grajales, racing the professional race category could bring exciting racing into the NC High Country.
The possibility of a Tour de France racer coming to our mountains to race shows once again why the NC High Country is the best place on the East Coast to ride and race your bicycle. You can find out more information on the races at the web site.
Thanks to The Village of Sugar Mountain, the Town of Banner Elk and the Town of Beech Mountain for sponsoring this event. Proceeds from the races will benefit the Grandfather Home for Children in Banner Elk.
If you are interested in volunteering or helping out with the race, please contact Doug Owen at Cycle 4 Life Bike Shop in Banner Elk.
