| Banner Elk Chamber's Summer Concert in the Park #8 - Harris Brothers |
Date: 8/5 - 8/05
Concert starts at 6:30 pm at the stage behind Bank of America on Highway 194. Bring your chairs or blankets. Food will also be available for purchase at the concert.
The co-sponsors of this week's concert are Frank & Mary Watts, wonderful residents of Banner Elk and a benefactor of the Chamber.
About The Harris Brothers: The Harris Brothers are what you might call songsters. They draw from a vast repertoire of American traditional music—“Americana” is often used to describe their style, but the Harris Brothers just call it music. It is blues mixed up with traditional Appalachian music, jazz, country, bluegrass and rock n’ roll; it’s stripped down, intense and real. Grammy Award-winner David Holt says: “The Harris Brothers are one of my favorite groups. Great playing, singing and soul. It just doesn't get any better than this.”
Reggie and Ryan Harris were born into a musical family in Caldwell County in the foothills of western North Carolina and have been picking and singing since they were small children. They most often perform with just an acoustic guitar, a bass, a suitcase used as a kick drum, and their two voices (switching between lead and harmony vocals), but they have been known to throw in a fiddle, banjo or electric guitar now and again. Listeners often ask, “How can two people put off such a big sound?”
The Harris Brothers have been playing steady gigs for many years - from honkytonks to large venues like the Blue Ridge Music Center and festivals like MerleFest, Hickory Fest and the Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival. They have lent their talents to projects such as Vassar Clements’ Vassar’s Jazz (Winter Harvest) and Dead Grass (Cedar Glen), two Summervilla projects with Nashville bassist Ross Sermons, several Caldwell County Traditional Musicians Showcases, as well as albums of their own. The brothers have shared the stage with such accomplished musicians as Vassar Clements, Bobby Hicks, David Holt, Peter Rowan, David Grisman, and Laura Boosinger, to name just a few.
With their showmanship, diverse repertoire and ability to improvise, no two shows are ever the same. And, with their hearts truly in the music they are playing, the Harris Brothers are sure to captivate any audience.

| Tax-Free Weekend in North Carolina, South Carolina & Tennessee |
Date: 8/6 - 8/08
Starting at 12:01 AM and running through Sunday, August 8 at 11:59 PM, North Carolina residents can purchase qualifying items without paying sales tax. The tax-free weekend also runs on the same dates in South Carolina and Tennessee. Check the various state rules, as the qualifying items and the price limitations are slightly different from state to state.
It has been 9 years since the first tax-free holiday in North Carolina and many residents have learned to wait until then to purchase many back-to-school items. Of course, the amount you can save is directly related to how much you buy.
Bigger ticket items such as back-to-school clothes can give you substantial savings. Computers bring even larger savings.
This year, with the economy still in crisis, many retailers are offering great deals and, coupled with paying no taxes, it is a great time for bargain hunters to go shopping. Also, many items come with rebates to mail in after your purchase.
You will need to shop early or shop late, especially in stores that are open 24 hours a day to avoid large crowds and long waiting times.
Qualifying items should include:
(1) Clothing, shoes, costumes, diapers adn uniforms that cost $100 for less per item.
(2) Sporting or recreational equipment such as ballet or tap shoes, gloves, goggles, helmets and ski boots that are $50 or less per item.
(3) Computers for $3,500 or less (keyboards, monitors and computer mice are not exempt unless they are purchased as part of a CPU).
(4) Computer supplies such as printers, personal digital assistants, printer paper and ink $250 or less per item.
(5) School supplies including calculators, binders, markers and rulers at $100 or less per item.
